HONG KONG—Covid-19 infections have spread to more of Shanghai’s elderly-care facilities, increasing the risk to the city’s large senior population as it battles the country’s worst outbreak since the start of the pandemic two years ago.
At Wanfu Nianhua Elderly Care Hospital in eastern Shanghai, 40 out of 69 patients and 19 out of 28 staff members had contracted Covid-19 as of Friday afternoon, according to Zhang Zhongyuan, a receptionist at the facility. Already short-staffed, the hospital has had to outfit infected orderlies in protective suits so they can continue caring for patients, most of whom are in their mid- to late-80s.
