PEORIA – Police have arrested a man in connection with a May shooting that left one dead.

Steven J. Coaxum, 34, was apprehended Wednesday by the Peoria Police Department’s Special Investigations Division in connection with the May 21 shooting, according to a news release from the Peoria Police Department.

The incident in the 1500 block of North Bigelow Street claimed the life of 21-year-old Roger Browder, who was pronounced dead at the scene. It was the city’s ninth homicide of 2022 – the sixth related to gun violence.

In addition to the arrest, police also executed a search warrant in the 2600 block of North Lavalle Court and recovered several firearms, according to the news release.

Coaxum is being held at the Peoria County Jail, where he faces charges of first degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
