More than 80 rounds fired in Parkland shooting; man critically hurt, 12-year-old grazed

A home was peppered with gunfire and two people were hurt, including a 12-year-old girl, in an overnight shooting in Parkland.

Investigators said more than 80 shell casings were found at the scene.

At 1:36 a.m. on Wednesday, dispatchers received a call about a shooting in the area of 98th Street South and Ainsworth Street South.

Pierce County deputies and Tacoma police officers arrived and found a vehicle crashed on 98th Street South. They found a man with gunshot wounds inside and a rifle on the front seat. He was treated by deputies and medics and then transported to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Because there had been other shootings at a home on 97th Street Court South on Sunday night and Monday morning, deputies went to the house and found more than 80 shell casings in the street, according to the sheriff’s department.

A home at the corner of 98th Street South and Ainsworth Avenue South was hit by the gunfire at least 30 times.

A 12-year-old girl in the home was grazed by a bullet. She was treated by medics but did not go to the hospital. Her grandmother woke up to find a bullet lying next to her arm in her bed, according to the sheriff’s department.

Investigators said preliminary information indicates that the man who was found shot in the car may have fired shots at people who had been hanging out in the street, and those people returned fire and then fled.

Detectives and forensic investigators collected evidence and documented the scene.

No suspects have been taken into custody.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
