School teaching will take place online or
individually in the occupied town of Skadovsk, local mayor Oleksandr Yakovliev
said in a Facebook post on Aug. 14.

“August is usually the time to prepare for school,” he said.

“I will say right away – there will be school this academic year.”

Skadovsk, a port city on the south coast of Ukraine’s Kherson Oblast, has been in a territory occupied by Russia’s invasion force since the early days of the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which started on Feb. 24.

According to Yakovliev, the Skadovsk City Council plans to start the new 2022-2023 academic year on Sept. 1, 2022.

He stressed the educational process would take place in an online and individual form (external, family (home)).

“All our school students are automatically promoted to the next grade and will be able to study regardless of their location,” he said.

According to the mayor, it is also possible to enroll students from educational institutions of other territorial communities upon the application of parents to the local educational institutions.

Yakovliev added the list of educational institutions to start working on Sept. 1 would be made public by Aug. 18.

Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers recommended that schools start the academic year on Sept. 1, and universities on Aug. 15, with the exception of first courses.

According to Ukrainian Minister of Education and Science Serhiy Shkarlet, special commissions will be created under the regional military administrations, which will determine whether it is safe to start offline education in local schools from Sept. 1.
