The lower house of the Dutch parliament has declared Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism because of its invasion of Ukraine, Dutch newspaper NRC reported on Nov. 24.
The resolution declaring Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism was supported by the vast majority of members of the House of Representatives.
In the resolution, Dutch MPs called for the maximum possible support for Ukraine in the humanitarian, diplomatic and military spheres. The Dutch legislature also condemned the massive Russian missile strikes on civilian infrastructure.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Wopke Hoekstra noted that the designation of Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism does not provide for any consequences in the legislation of the country.
However, the decision should be seen as an expression of support for Ukraine, he said.
Russia has been waging a full-scale war against Ukraine for nine months, since Feb. 24. Russian troops strike at Ukrainian cities across the country. The targets of attacks are residential buildings, hospitals, and civilian energy, water and heating infrastructure.
On Nov. 23, the European Parliament declared Russia to be a state sponsor of terrorism and called for its international isolation. After that, Russian troops launched a massive missile attack on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine.
As a result of the attacks, almost all of Ukraine was left without electricity and communications.
On Oct. 13, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution supporting Ukraine and recognizing the Russian regime as terrorist.
A number of European parliaments have already individually recognized the Kremlin regime as a terrorist one. Among them are Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
