Not the ”martial law” of Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of Ukraine’s Office of the President

 

A few months ago, this article’s author spoke with an influential official.

– I recently thought of renting a car and you know what was the first thing that came to my mind?

– What?

– What will I answer journalists, and in particular you, when you film me and ask what kind of car this is?



– The idea of checks and balances over power is a useful concept not only for society but also for the power itself. This is your failsafe, even though most don’t usually want to realise it.

– Can you guess my immediate thought after that?

– No.

– That you won’t film. That there will be no questions asked, so no need to answer. The country [after all] is under martial law.

(Due to the curfew and a number of martial law restrictions, it is currently almost impossible to control those in power – Ukrainska Pravda).

It was because of martial law that we decided to report this story.

In the editorial office of Ukrainska Pravda, there was a long professional discussion on this topic, which will be discussed further.

Finally, we agreed that the lifestyle of one of the most influential members of the presidential team does not fully correspond to the public standards set by the “martial law” in which this country has been living for the tenth month now.

Is it possible to choose a new car, from one of the most expensive brands in the world, as a means of transportation during the war and live amongst the richest people of the country?

Can the representatives of power in this country, a quarter territory lies already in ruins, live luxuriously?

And what is most prominent – are these advantages obtained in a transparent way, and not with the help of the power?

“Test drive”

At the end of June, city cameras recorded a new 2021 Porsche Taycan in Kyiv.

The car was purchased on 8 June 2022, and on the 25th of the month, it was recorded seven times during the day by the cameras of the Safe City video surveillance system [Safe City project provides video footage of vehicles and pedestrians on the streets, and allows monitoring and management of utility services, police, and emergency services in cities]. It was seen driving on the Novoobukhivska and Staroobukhivska highways, next to the main residences of Ukraine’s millionaires – Koncha Zaspa, or officially – Kozyn.

The cost of this car on specialised websites is approximately 100,000 dollars.
