Poland has officially asked Germany for approval to transfer some of its German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak wrote on Twitter on Jan. 24.

“The Germans have already received our request for consent to the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine,” he said.

The minister called on Germany to join the coalition of countries that support Ukraine with supplies of Leopard 2 tanks.

“This is our common cause, because it is about the security of the whole of Europe,” Blaszczak wrote.

According to German newspaper DW, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, after talks with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, said that the member states can already start training the Ukrainian military in the operation of Leopard tanks.

Germany’s decision to supply tanks to Ukraine will be made “soon,” said Stoltenberg.

According to the results of the Jan. 20 Ramstein summit, the participants did not agree on the supply of Leopard to Ukraine.

Some partner countries have expressed their readiness to transfer German-made Leopard tanks to Ukraine, but they are waiting for Germany’s approval to re-export the tanks.

Spokesman of the German government, Steffen Hebestreit, on Jan. 23 said that discussions continue on the possibility of transferring main battle tanks to Ukraine in Germany, but that the German government had to take into account the views of the German public.
