Owner Buys Soft Crate for Dog, Quickly Realizes It Was ‘Not a Good Idea’

A dog owner has left people in stitches after her plan to use a soft crate for her puppy backfired hilariously.

Kaylie Devlin from Illinois shared a video of her now 3-year-old dog, Leila, when she was just 4 months old, and her misadventure with a soft crate.

In a video that has been viewed over 30 million times on Instagram, little Leila energetically rolled around the yard inside the soft crate as her owners frantically chased her. “Yeah, not a good idea,” said the owner in the caption.

“We bought the soft crate because it was easier to travel with due to its size, but quickly learned she needed to be crate-trained first,” Devlin told Newsweek.

“We first made sure she was OK, but she was clearly having the time of her life. So we laughed and got her out of it right after she calmed down enough for us to grab it. I shared it because I love giving our audience laughs and smiles. Everyone seems to love it, which makes me happy,” she said.

Dog owners should choose the right option for their and their pets’ needs. Soft dog crates are designed to be easy to carry, making them ideal for car trips and short journeys. Easy to set up and collapse, they are great for visits to friends and family.

Hard dog crates are constructed from metal, plastic or heavy-duty materials with solid walls and ventilation holes or bars. These are more often used as a permanent or semi-permanent kennel in the home and are used for crate training.

The video prompted an outpouring of responses from other dog owners who experienced similar soft crate fiascos.

Viewer @hurricane_suze commented: “Mine ATE his way out. You read that right. Mesh, fabric, all of it. Found him roaming free in the morning with a big gaping hole in the soft crate.”

While @katiethecrazydoglady recalled: “I made the same mistake with my first Aussie. We woke up to him in the crate and on the couch.”

Fellow dog owner @haleyalexis17 said: “We got this when we first got our Chihuahua mix. I forgot something and went back inside, and she had rolled it across the place all the way to the front door in under 10 minutes.”
