A teacher injured in the Apalachee High School shooting on Wednesday that killed four people, asked “Is everyone else okay?” after waking up from surgery, his daughter has said.
Special education math teacher David Phenix, was shot in the foot and the hip during the shooting at the school in Winder, Georgia, daughter Katie Phenix said.
Katie Phenix revealed his first words in an update on Wednesday evening.
“I think that speaks volumes to the type of man he is— always putting others first, no matter his personal situation,” she said in a Facebook post.
She said her father woke up in ICU “in a lot of pain, but managed to crack a few good jokes.”
“Additional surgeries will probably be needed, but as of right now he is resting. It will be a very long road ahead,” she wrote on Facebook. “We will know more tomorrow.”
Two 14-year-old students, named as Mason Schermehorn and Christian Angulo, and two other math teachers, Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie died. Nine people, including eight students, were injured and taken to hospitals.
Katie Phenix added: “I sit here in absolute shock, awe, and disbelief as I read post after post about the happenings of today. We send all our love, prayers, and kind words to those who are also suffering in our community during this time.”
