A 23-year-old Mexican influencer was shot dead in her beauty salon while broadcasting live on TikTok, Puerto Rico newspaper El Imparcial reported.

Valeria Márquez was streaming from the salon in the Santa María shopping plaza, Jalisco, when a man arrived and shot her before fleeing, the paper said.

Officials are investigating the death but are yet to publicly name the victim, noting she had “an active presence and influence on social media.”

Newsweek reached out to Jalisco’s security secretary and the prosecutor’s office via email for comment outside of regular working hours on Wednesday.

What To Know

A 911 call reported the death at the salon on Avenida Servidor Público, in the Colonia Real del Carmen neighborhood, about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office said.

The State Attorney General’s Office is conducting an investigation “with the goal of clarifying the death of a 23-year-old woman,” it said in a statment.

“According to initial investigations, she was at her establishment when a man entered the premises and apparently fired a firearm at her, killing her,” it added.

“The victim is a person with an active presence and influence on social media.”

Márquez was in her salon when a man arrived on a motorcycle to deliver a gift, who without warning shot Márquez in the chest and head before fleeing, El Imparcial reported. The suspect was not yet identified.

Márquez’s death appeared to be shown during a live broadcast to her fans on TikTok.

Social media posts purporting to show video of the moment have been widely shared online.

A Public Prosecutor’s Office agent, in coordination with investigative police officers, is on the scene gathering testimony and evidence, and experts from the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences are processing the scene, securing and collecting evidence, officials said.
