Olympic Rugby player Ilona Maher has a refreshing update to a little saying that has had a big impact on a lot of women’s self esteem.
Although the line was widely criticized at the time for how it romanticized eating disorders, the “mantra” still exists to this day, and is often used by those who equate thinness with moral superiority or to shame women for their eating choices.
“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,” Maher said. “Uhhh, ya’ll ever tried being strong?”
She chuckled before continuing.
“I feel good! I feel well fed,” she said while showing off her muscles. “I feel ready to take on anybody. You guys gotta try this shit! It’s a different level. … I love it!”
She then concluded with a pretty funny line: “Also, have you guys tasted tiramisu? Because that shit — my God.”
Maher’s followers loved the bronze medalist’s rebuttal.
“Patriarchy wants us hungry and weak. We feel good eating and strong,” one user responded.
“Nothing looks as good as confidence,” said another commenter.
“Yesssss ma’am. my husband hurt his back and couldn’t get himself from car to door after ER visit today. I carried him 🤣 I deserve tiramisu,” a third TikToker joked.
In Moss’ defense, she has since admitted publicly that she regrets uttering the phrase, which she said she picked up from a friend.
Speaking to NBC in 2018 via the BBC, Moss said she no longer believes in the mantra and is happy to see the modeling industry changing its rigid standards of beauty.
