Ray Winstone has compared acting to boxing
The 68-year-old British actor has spent years carving out a place for himself as a movie hardman, rising to fame as borstal tough nut Carlin in Scum after a stint as a teenage boxer, and has now said he thinks the respect and trust between opponents in the ring is the same as the connection between performers on screen.
Speaking to Variety in Sarajevo where he recently visited to receive an honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award for career achievement at this year’s film festival in the city, Ray said: “In a ring, you face an opponent, and you’re man upon man.
“It’s the same kind of thing, acting. You have to trust and respect someone who’s standing opposite, and you realize you need that person to be in form as much as you.
“They make you look good.”
Ray was speaking in the Variety Lounge, presented by the Sarajevo Film Festival and BH Telecom, ahead of an open-air screening of John Hillcoat’s The Proposition.
It marked his first visit to the Bosnian capital, where he praised the warmth of local people and the city’s atmosphere.
Recalling the surprise he felt at receiving his award, Ray said: “Then you kind of sit down and think what it is actually about.
“I’ve been making films for 50 years, and to be awarded something like that from a place like this is quite an honor.”
