Queen Latifah shared how she’s reclaiming her power while experiencing menopause during a recent interview on “Today With Jenna & Friends.”
“One of the things that we love about you is that you always use your voice for good,” host Jenna Bush Hager said on a Wednesday episode while sitting down with the music icon, whose real name is Dana Owens. “And now you’re talking about something that all of us are gonna need to know about, which is menopause,” adding that when she was growing up, it wasn’t a topic her mother or grandmother talked about with her.
Latifah responded that menopause isn’t a subject that has been “discussed a lot.”
“Still a lot of people have a problem with saying the word,” she said. “This is something we gotta get comfortable with as women.”

The “U.N.I.T.Y” rapper said that menopause is not “taboo” and that “menopause care should not be a luxury,” and should be accessible to those who need it. “We’re all gonna feel it, and we’re all gonna go through it. Our hormones are gonna change as we age.”
“I feel more powerful and more empowered when I know what’s going on with my body and I can make a decision about it,” she stated.
In an interview with People, the “Living Single” actor detailed her experience hearing the word from her doctor, and how the doctor made the experience less “scary” — but she realizes how this can be daunting for anyone going through it.
“At the end of the day, it’s a physical change that’s happening and we all want to understand how to deal with it and how to handle it better,” she said.
