Prince William will hold a meeting with Donald Trump in Paris today, as the pair both attend the re-opening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Both the prince and the US president-elect are in Paris, France to mark the extensive restoration of the historic cathedral, which was damaged in a catastrophic fire in April 2019.

The Prince of Wales will attend the event on behalf of the United Kingdom, and Kensington Palace have announced that while there, he will also host meetings with Donald Trump and US First Lady Jill Biden.

It is expected that Prince William and Donald Trump will discuss the importance of the ‘special relationship’ between the UK and the US, as the former president prepares to return to power on January 20.

The pair have met before, notably at the state banquet held by the late Queen Elizabeth II for President Trump at Buckingham Palace in June 2019. Trump is known for having a less cordial relationship with William’s brother Prince Harry, having regularly criticized the royal and his wife Meghan Markle since their departure from the royal family in 2020.

The meeting with William comes as the UK’s new Labour government, led by Sir Keir Starmer, is keen to keep good favor with Donald Trump, as he appears set on imposing new tariffs upon his return to power.

This weekend, the Notre-Dame Cathedral will reopen to the public and to celebrate the moment, President Macron and the Archbishop of Paris are hosting a special event at the cathedral which will be attended by Heads of State from around the world.

The trip marks Donald Trump’s first international engagement since he triumphed over Kamala Harris in November’s presidential election, and will likely see a number of encounters with other world leaders, keen to connect with the president-elect ahead of his return to power. Ukraine’s President Zelensky, who will be hoping to keep Trump on side in his struggle against Russia, is also expected to attend.
