Ukraine’s fifth president Petro Poroshenko finally crossed the Ukrainian border at the third attempt on May 30 to travel to the European People’s Party summit in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, his political colleague Volodymyr Ariev has reported on Facebook.

Russia’s war against Ukraine – the main events of May 30

Late on May 27, Poroshenko was prevented from crossing the Ukrainian border in Lviv Oblast as he was traveling to a meeting of NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Vilnius.

The next day, Poroshenko was again denied permission to cross the state border, reportedly due to problems with the QR code on his permit.

Poroshenko addressed incumbent President Volodymyr Zelensky in an open letter, in which he complained about the obstacles he had encountered while trying to travel to a meeting of NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Vilnius, Lithuania.

According to Poroshenko, against the backdrop of Russian aggression, “it is extremely important to maintain the unity and coordination of our efforts, avoid any internal strife, and work together on all possible international platforms, especially such weighty ones as the European People’s Party.”

The former president also stressed that his trip was official, and was being made at the invitation of the leadership of the European People’s Party.

Poroshenko’s party, European Solidarity, said that their leader is a member of the official delegation of country’s parliament to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

The party added that it considers this incident to be a “direct order from the authorities, who are continuing their war against Poroshenko.”

At the same time, Ukraine’s border guards stressed that Poroshenko had been denied leaving the country due to a problem with his permit documents.
