A year into Russia’s full-scale invasion of
Ukraine, the population of Western countries supports a complete Ukrainian victory,
while Eastern countries want the war to end as soon as possible, according to a
sociological study the European Council on Foreign Relations published on March
8.
A plurality of respondents in Europe (38%), the United States (34%), and the UK (44%) are convinced that Ukraine must regain all its territories – even if that means a protracted war.
At the same time, citizens of China (42%), Turkey (48%), and India (54%) prefer a quick end to the war, even if Ukraine has to cede territory.
In the United States and Europe, the majority believes that Russia is an adversary or a rival. 71% of respondents in the United States, 77% in the UK, and 65% in the EU see the future of relations with Russia as a confrontation.
At the same time, despite the war, most residents of India (80%), China (79%), and Turkey (69%) consider Russia an “ally” or “partner.”
The survey was conducted between December 2022 and January 2023 in the UK, nine EU countries (Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Romania, and Estonia), as well as in China, India, Turkey, Russia, and the United States. A total of 19,765 people were polled.
