President Volodomyr Zelenskyy met with International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi and togther they visited the Dnipro
Hydroelectric Power Plant station in Zaporizhzhya on March 27, Grossi said on Twitter.

“The Dnipro hydroelectric station is an essential part of the system that sustains the nuclear safety of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. Zelenskyy showed me the recent damage suffered by the dam,” reads the message.

They also exchanged thoughts on protecting the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP and its staff. Grossi reassured that Ukraine’s nuclear facilities have the full support of the IAEA.

Russia damaged the Dnipro hydroelectric dam during one of its mass missile attacks at the end of December. Russia also damaged the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, resulting in the level of the water in the reservoir dropping sharply. Zaporizhzhya NPP’s reactor cooling systems rely on there being a sufficient level of water in the reservoir to operate correctly.

Earlier, Grossi announced that he would again visit to Zaporizhzhya NPP.

He said that IAEA has abandoned the idea of a demilitarized zone around the plant. The agency is looking now for a “behavioral” rather than a “territorial” solution, which would include a commitment not to attack the station or use it for attacks.

Zelenskyy claimed earlier that international organizations have proved to be unable to resolve the situation with the Zaporizhzhya NPP. Other mechanisms need to be sought, he believes.
