’s Lucasfilm said Friday it plans to release three new Star Wars films, expanding on the fictional universe created by

George Lucas

in the 1970s.

Lucasfilm’s president,

Kathleen Kennedy,

said at a Star Wars fan event in London Friday that the new films are in their beginning stages. She didn’t say when they would be released.

Moviegoers haven’t seen a new Star Wars film since 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” the final movie in a trilogy. The movie grossed more than $1 billion at the box office, but didn’t surpass the success of the two previous films

Actress

Daisy Ridley,

who played Rey in the trilogy, will be returning as the character in one of the new films. That movie will be set 15 years after “The Rise of Skywalker,” Disney said

While Star Wars took a theater break, the franchise has helped fill Disney’s streaming platform Disney+ with television series, including “The Mandalorian.” A spinoff show, “Ahsoka,” is coming to Disney+ in August.

The coming films will be helmed by three different directors:

Dave Filoni,

an executive producer of “The Mandalorian”;

James Mangold,

director of Disney’s coming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”; and

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy,

a director for the Disney+ superhero series “Ms. Marvel,” who will direct Ms. Ridley in the new movie.
