Giancarlo Esposito says “no one” has correctly guessed his ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ role yet.
The 66-year-old actor debuted as his mystery character in the recently released trailer for the upcoming Marvel movie, though the villain is still yet to be named by ‘The Boys’ star or studio boss Kevin Feige.
Speaking on a panel at the Fanboy Expo Knoxville at the weekend (13.07.24), he said: “The character I’m playing is a bada**.
”That always excites me. For me to develop that character in line with the character’s inception is a fascinating art for me.
“I had an incredible time shooting it. I’m not telling you who I’m playing … people are trying to guess, and no one has guessed correctly yet.”
The flick stars 45-year-old Anthony Mackie as the newly christened superhero and Harrison Ford, 82, who has taken over the role of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross after the character’s original actor, William Hurt, passed away in 2022.
While he was excited to take up the mantle of Captain America in his own picture, the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ star admitted he found working with the Hollywood icon “so intimidating”.
During an interview with Inverse, he recounted: “The first day was so intimidating.
“I was so f****** nervous, I couldn’t remember my lines. He’s Harrison f****** Ford.
“There is this aura about him. But he dispels that really quickly because he’s such a cool guy. He’s everything a movie star should be. He would say, ‘Let’s shoot this piece of s***.’ And everybody was like, ‘Yeah, let’s shoot this s***.’”
Mackie added he had spent “a good bit of time” with the ‘Indiana Jones’ star to retain the good relationship his character had shared previously with Hurt’s version of the military officer.
He explained: “Ross and Cap have always had that relationship, where they were friends and they respected each other, but they always bumped heads. That’s their relationship in the storyline.”
