Twenty-five years have passed since the Columbine High School massacre. On April 20, 1999, two students opened fire at Columbine High School in Colorado, claiming the lives of 12 students and one teacher, and permanently reshaping the trajectory of school safety across the United States.

Columbine significantly heightened the national conversation surrounding school-centered gun violence and remains deeply ingrained in the collective consciousness of Americans, influencing perceptions of the school experience for the nation’s youth. Since Columbine, more than 360,000 U.S. students have faced gun violence at school in 394 shootingswith 38 in 2023 alone.

In the aftermath of Columbine and subsequent shootings, ongoing discussions among parents, staff, students, and government officials have persisted for over two decades. These groups have extensively debated the root causes and acute situational irregularities that lead to school shootings, prompting the implementation of various strategies to address the public health crisis.
