A state law requires an investigation into any death that involves a police officer acting in an official capacity or while a person is in custody.
The results of the investigation are to be presented to a grand jury to determine if any crimes were committed by the officer or officers involved.
A grand jury in April cleared a Pemberton Township officer in connection with the death of a 41-year-old motorcyclist, John R. Nutt of Mount Laurel, one year earlier.
Nutt, a motorcyclist, died in a collision with a civilian vehicle during a police pursuit.
