Russian forces launched cross-border attacks on nine communities in Sumy Oblast over the past day, the head of the Sumy Oblast Military Administration, Dmytro Zhyvytskyy, wrote on Telegram on Jan. 23.
The Russians targeted the settlements of Seredino-Budska, Znob-Novgorodska, Yunakivska, Putylivska, Krasnopilska, Myropilska, Esmanska and Vorozhbyanska.
Most of the communities are between 5 and 8 kilometers from Ukraine’s border with Russia.
The Russians attacked with artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, and mortars, and in some cases even with firearms and machine guns.
As a result of the shelling of the settlement of Esmanska, one young woman died and three others were injured.
